A sonic screwdriver can be a dangerous thing, as new Doctor Matt Smith recently found out in dramatic fashion on the set of the show.

Smith was filming in Llandaff, Wales. In the rain. As he brandished the screwdriver prop above his head, sparks flew and the actor was reported to be in visible pain.

A BBC spokesperson for Dr Who said:

A pre-planned special effect was carried out on set during filming of Doctor Who. Although Matt Smith was initially shocked, he was not injured and carried on filming until the end of the day as planned.

Which sounds like the sparks themselves were a scripted effect but ended up more powerful than expected. The main thing is that Matt “Benjamin” Smith wasn’t seriously hurt.
