Tardis Console Redesign

Following on from yesterday’s unveiling of the new Doctor Who logo, the BBC has anounced that the Tardis console is also to get a makeover. The new design will incorporate household objects and will be created by kids.

It’s only for one episode. The children’s show Blue Peter is running a competition for kids aged between six and twelve, with the winning design being used in one story of the new Matt Smith series. The use of household objects is a requirement of the plot.

Dr Who production designer Edward Thomas said:

Don’t come along with a design that’s finished and too technical – it needs to have a lot of character. It’s about being clever with what you find around the house and make sure it really feels as if the Doctor has put it together.

Blue Peter previously ran a “design a monster” competition which was won by Wiliam Grantham with Abzorbaloff. Abzorbaloff appeared in the “Doctor lite” episode “Love and Monsters” and my guess is that the household Tardis console will also appear in such a Doctor lite story, perhaps put together by a human Who fan or someone in telepathic contact with the Doctor.

Update: Tardis console winner announced
