Tennant’s Hamlet Could Hit Screen

March 5th, 2009 Posted in Doctor Who, Movies, News | no comments

tennantGood news for those of us who were unable to see David Tennant’s award winning performance in Hamlet: there are rumours that the cast are to reprise their performance for a movie.

Quite how definite this is remains unclear. According to Oliver Ford Davies, who played Polonius:

We are intending to film it over two or three weeks in June. It won’t be a full feature film as there isn’t time but it will certainly be more than just the filming of the stage. It will be fantastic to work together again.

The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) themselves are more cautious, saying:

It’s true that we’re looking to produce a screen version of Hamlet – we’d love to capture the play on film. We’re not sure exactly what form the production will take, we’d be silly to rule anything out at this stage

Deciding on the “form” might well be difficult. Productions of Hamlet normally last four hours plus, which is a long time for a movie. However cutting a single line would cause outrage amongst both Shakespeare purists and Tennant fans.

It’ll be interesting to see what finally emerges. As Hamlet himself might have said:

The film’s the thing,
Wherein we’ll catch the performance of the TimeLord
