Torchwood America Hits Buffers

torchwood-usa

Following the fiasco of the new Daleks it’s good to see some good sense breaking out in the Whoniverse: the proposed Torchwood America looks like it might not happen.

The BBC had been in talks with Fox about producing an Americanized version of the show, a truly horrific prospect. Fortunately Fox have now pulled out. According to the Beeb:

BBC Worldwide Productions and the FOX Broadcasting Company have mutually agreed not to progress together with a 13-episode serialized Torchwood format

That’s good news, but before we start celebrating there was a rider to the statement: “We are currently in discussion with several interested networks.” Jane Tranter of BBC Worldwide said that although Fox has declined to be involved the Beeb hasn’t given up on the idea yet: “It’s very much ongoing and very much alive”.

Don’t do it Jane. Fox pulling out gives you a great opportunity to take a dose of retcon and forget this car crash of an idea.

Torchwood America?!?

torchwood-usa

If you thought the idea of an American version of Being Human was a bad idea (I did. I do), how about a US Torchwood? Made by Fox of all people.

At the moment it’s only a rumour, no deal has been signed. However Fox are reported to be interested in making a US version of Torchwood. Clearly Torchwood America won’t be satisfied with provincial little plots but will be jetting around dealing with a “global storyline”.

One tiny crumb of comfort is that if it happens the new show is likely to be written by Russell T. Davies and include Julie Gardner on the production team. John Barrowman could even be along for the ride as Captain Jack.

Even so, the pressure to succumb to US TV style would be massive. And if a US Torchwood was worth watching it would probably be cancelled mid season.

Torchwood Series Four

torchwood-logo

Good news for fans of Captain Jack: Torchwood will be back for a fourth series. Probably.

The BBC has not yet officially commissioned more Torchwood but Russell T. Davies seems pretty confident of making season four and beyond. RTD told TV Guide Magazine:

The recession has hit British television, but fingers crossed, it will be a go. We expect things to start to move in January. We’ve got great ideas for the show. I think there’s a further lease on life for many years to come, but certainly for a [fourth season]

We don’t know yet what format Torchwood 4 will take or who will be in it, however RTD has previously said:

I’ve got a shape in mind, and I’ve got stories. I know where you’d find Gwen and Rhys, and their baby, and Jack, and I know how you’d go forward with a new form of Torchwood.

If the BBC asked for another 13 one-part stories, that’s what we’d do. I’m ready for anything, but I think it works well as one continuous story.

But if the BBC decide they want 13 one-offs, I’ll suddenly decide that’s the best format in the world!

Torchwood: No Return For Ianto

ianto

Anyone still hoping that Ianto Jones might be magically reincarnated for series three of Torchwood looks like being disappointed.

Geeks of Doom reports from DragonCon 2009 where Gareth David-Lloyd appeared on a panel. The actor is reported as saying:

It looks very likely that they’ll get a full season, but all we know is that they’re in talks. As far as Ianto is concerned, he won’t [be returning]… But, there’s always a chance. I really don’t know.

Personally I think this is a good thing. Ianto was a superb character – that was one of the reasons his death was such a shock. To bring him back from the dead would undermine the dramatic value of both that scene and the entire Children of Earth mini-series. It would also destroy the integrity of the show.

Of course that’s not to rule out a guest appearance by Ianto in some season 3 time travel or alternative universe story…

John Barrowman Defies Death in Car Crash

arrowman-car1John Barrowman – best known as Captain Jack Harkness in Torchwood – seems to have picked up some of the death defying skills of his character. According to newspaper reports he survived a high speed car crash with little more than minor injuries.

Barrowman was filming a segment for the Channel Five driving program Fifth Gear. He and the show’s presenter Tiff Needell were rally driving in a £120,000 Subaru with Barrowman at the wheel.

According to reports, Barrowman lost control of the car which flipped over four times and just missed going into a lake. Paramedics pulled Needell and Barrowman from the car and removed some shattered glass from the Torchwood star’s eye before he was sent to hospital.

Barrowman is reportedly fine with no damage to his famous good looks. However he did receive a “ticking off” from his mum.

The crash will be shown on tonight’s edition of Fifth Gear.
